For Months, a mysterious black crust has been spreading up the coast, fouling shipping ports, crippling harbor towns and sinking ships at sea. It’s spreading so fast that it may destroy the entire Atlantic coastline before anyone can stop it. The expedition, led by world-renowned marine biologist, Dr. Candace Warren, set out to find the source of the destruction. Sixteen-year-old Alannis Summers has talked her way on board as a volunteer, hoping to find adventure and a taste of life as a marine biologist.

The scientists don’t know for sure where the Fouling came from, but they found a description of something similar written more than 300 years ago. The Spanish explorer who wrote it was sailing off the coast of the Cubbarros Islands–in waters that are now controlled by the Commission. No one has been allowed in the area for more than 50 years, and the Commission is known to sink ships that wander too close.

As the expedition searches on the edge of restricted waters, Alannis discovers something more devastating than the Fouling. Something hidden below the surface. When she risks her life to explore farther into the deep, the captain’s son, Jake, steps in to provide a ready explanation for her distracted behavior. Their fictitious romance removes the team’s suspicions, but casts her as a boy crazy teenager and crushes her hopes of earning their respect. That is, until she finally introduces Dr. Warren to the secret she’s discovered–one that could change everything we know about ourselves.
