Five days after a snorkeler discovered a dead 15-foot oarfish in the shallows off Catalina Island, California, another one of the deep sea creatures washed ashore some 50 miles away. These long ribbon-like fish may have provided inspiration for the legend of giant sea serpents, and it seems that today, they’re still offering us fodder for modern mythology. Rumor has it oarfish wash ashore before major earthquakes. So could these strandings be telling us something?
